A bale of hay doesn't come with the same detailed nutritional label you'll find on a bag of commercial feed.

That doesn't mean every bale provides the same nutrition.

One grass hay may provide very different protein, calorie, fiber or major mineral levels than another—even if they look similar.

A forage analysis helps take some of the guesswork out of feeding by showing what your dried forage is actually contributing.

Once you know the foundation, you can make more educated decisions about:

Grain.
Ration balancers.
Vitamin/mineral supplementation.
Additional nutritional support.

This is especially true for when it comes to purchasing hay. Don't buy by the bale, buy by the ton. Purchase off a known weight, bale weights can range significantly, it all depends on the grower's practices and how they harvest the forage.

A bale is not equal to a bale, but a ton is equal to a ton.

Don't assume. Know your hay. We can help!

Your Horse Eats Forage First. Your Feeding Program Should Start There Too.

Forage isn’t just something your horse eats between meals—it should make up the foundation of the entire diet.

Hay and pasture provide much of the horse’s daily calories, fiber, protein and minerals. But their nutritional contribution can vary tremendously depending on plant species, maturity, growing conditions, harvest timing and storage.

That means two horses eating the same number of pounds of hay may be receiving very different levels of nutrition.

Before asking, “What supplement should I add?” start with:

“What is my forage already providing?”

Once you understand that, you can identify the nutritional gaps and build the rest of the feeding program with purpose.

FORAGE FIRST. Test it. Know it. Balance it.

Quite simply, grain isn’t always the answer at all.

For many metabolic horses, success starts with a forage-first approach. Since forage makes up 85-100% of the diet, understanding its nutrient profile — and NSC level — is the foundation.

From there, the goal is to fill nutritional gaps rather than add more feed.

Balanced vitamins and minerals like those found in our Equi-Shine™ products support healthy metabolic function while keeping NSC in check.

Every horse is different, so there’s no one-size-fits-all plan.

A Partnership Between Nutrition and Your Farrier - It is ONE of the STRONGEST partnerships in horse care.

Farriers and nutritionists share the same goal: healthier horses.

Your farrier can balance the hoof, improve mechanics, and identify early warning signs of developing problems. Nutrition supplies the raw materials necessary to grow stronger hoof walls, healthier soles, tighter white lines, and more resilient horn between appointments.

Neither works as well without the other.

Together, they're building healthier horses from the ground up.

Take five minutes this week to check your horses hooves.

Warm temperatures, changing of the seasons, changing moisture levels, dry footing, and frequent riding can all challenge hoof quality.

And remember...

Your horse's nutrition is working every day—even when you can't see it yet.

Confidence your horse is getting the right nutrients, all on a single page.

That’s what a forage and ration analysis with Doctor’s Choice does. Accurate, straightforward data for clear decision making.

Strong hooves are a team effort. This before-and-after from Dustin Johanning of Arrow J Ranch Farrier Service shows what can happen when sound farrier practices are paired with balanced, foundational nutrition. After a little over a year of consistent hoof care and Equi-Shine Pellets, this horse went from white line disease, crumbling hoof walls and crushed heels to a healthier, stronger hoof.

Your farrier can shape and balance the hoof, but nutrition provides the materials to build it. When balanced nutrition and consistent farrier care work together, you're supporting stronger hoof walls, healthier soles, and better-quality growth from the inside out.

Healthy hooves are a partnership, feed the hoof your farrier wants to work with.
