Haunting all pediatric dentists🤣👻 See below for why!
❌Frequent snacking
Every snack triggers an acid attack on teeth that lasts 20–30 minutes. When kids graze all day, teeth never get a break to recover, putting them at high risk for cavities.
❌Pediatricians recommending first visit at age 3
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends establishing a dental home by AGE 1 (or within 6 months of the first tooth). Early visits are about prevention, not just “checking for cavities.” We’re looking at habits, diet, fluoride exposure, and helping parents stay ahead of problems before they start.
❌“Baby teeth don’t matter”
They absolutely do! Primary teeth guide jaw development, help with speech, and hold space for permanent teeth. Untreated decay can lead to pain, infection, and even affect eating and growth. Early loss = bigger problems later.
❌Bottle of milk to bed
Putting a child to bed with milk or breastfeeding throughout the night exposes teeth to sugars for prolonged periods, creating an ideal environment for decay. These cavities develop quickly and can start as soon as teeth erupt. Brushing should be the last step before sleep, with nothing but water afterward.
❌Pacifiers
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry notes prolonged use is linked to open bite, crossbite, and altered maxillary growth, with risk increasing over time. These changes can have long lasting effects. Start reducing the use of pacifiers around 12–18 months. If you can avoid introducing one altogether, even better!
