Private equity just blew up 3 of the biggest dental chains in America at the same time, and it was not a coincidence.
Here is what actually happened.
Aspen Dental, the biggest chain, has 3 billion dollars in loans coming due in 2027. They cannot pay it, so they are scrambling for new investors.
Affordable Care, which owns the implant centers, just got taken over by Blackstone and KKR after cutting 70 percent of its debt off the books.
Dental Care Alliance just announced a 1.1 billion dollar debt cut and needed 95 million in fresh capital to keep the lights on.
Three different companies. Same exact problem.
Private equity rolled into dentistry, bought practices in bulk on cheap debt when rates were near zero, then squeezed costs and pushed high margin treatments to feed the loans. Then rates went up and the debt got too expensive to carry.
Here is who still pays. The dentists who got rolled up are still under quotas. The patients are still being upsold. And the doctors who never sold are competing against chains that are bleeding money but still open.
Private equity was never about better dentistry. It was about better returns.
