🦷 Who is actually scaling your teeth?

In up to 20 states, a new role called an Oral Preventive Assistant — or OPA — could be performing your dental cleaning with as little as 120 hours of training.

Your licensed hygienist spent years in an accredited program, passed national boards, and holds a state license — because what we do is so much more than cleaning.

Here’s what’s at stake for YOU as a patient 👇

When we scale your teeth and probe your gums, we are also:
🔍 Assessing for early gum disease
🔍 Identifying signs of systemic conditions like diabetes and heart disease
🔍 Spotting oral cancer
🔍 Creating individualized care plans based on YOUR health history

These are clinical decisions. Missing them has real consequences — delayed diagnoses, untreated disease, and worsening health outcomes that go far beyond your mouth.

An untrained provider doesn’t know what they don’t know. And that’s exactly what makes this dangerous.

I’m a Registered Dental Hygienist with 30 years of experience and I’m asking you to take 60 seconds and sign the official ADHA petition.

30 years in dentistry and nobody handed me a warning label.
The wear on our bodies is real and it’s time we talk about it.

As hygienists, we see this every day.
People aren’t “bad” for spending money on things they enjoy, but preventive healthcare keeps getting pushed to the bottom of the list. Until it becomes painful, expensive, or irreversible.

Your health deserves priority!!! 🦷
