👅 When was the last time you opened wide for an oral cancer screening?

👄 The health of your mouth extends beyond your teeth and gums. There are many hidden areas within the mouth, head, and neck that should be checked at every 6 month recall (and as hygienists, we are extensively trained to check them).

🚬 Risk factors like to***co and alcohol use as well as age are important to consider but there are plenty of documented cases in patients without risk factors.

🦷 The most significant case I have personally found in my career was in a female who had to have half of her palate and 3 of her teeth extracted‼️in order to surgically remove the entire cancerous lesion. She now has to wear a prosthetic denture in order to talk and eat (but she is alive). She had -zero- risk factors. Get checked!

The technical term for this is the “oral-systemic link” but the main thing to understand is that the bacteria found in the mouth of someone with active gum disease is also found in multiple different body systems. The presence of this bacteria in your mouth creates unnecessary health risks including:
🦠 Alzheimer’s & Dementia
🦠 Diabetes
🦠 Premature labor or low birth weight babies
🦠 Cardiovascular issues including heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke
🦠 Rheumatoid arthritis
