🦷 SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT
In 1974, Curtis and Cantor described “The Forgotten Patient in Maxillofacial Prosthetics”—highlighting those who had undergone radical mandibular resection.
Just one year later, Ian Taylor transformed the field with the introduction of the fibula free flap, reshaping outcomes and setting the foundation for modern reconstruction.
But today, has a new “forgotten patient” emerged?
This presentation explores the cleft lip and palate patient—often managed without the long-term, multidisciplinary perspective required for optimal lifelong outcomes. From neonatal intervention to adult rehabilitation, cleft patients present with complex needs that demand specialized care.
Attendees will gain insight into:
• Early cleft management and its impact on long-term outcomes
• The role and controversies of NAM and PLANA
• Comprehensive rehabilitation from infancy through adulthood

🦷 SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT: Dr. Ronald Jacobson
Cleft and craniofacial care doesn't stop at the surgical or prosthetic phase — orthodontics is woven through the whole treatment timeline.
Dr. Jacobson presents "Advances in Orthodontic Treatment for Cleft and Craniofacial Cases" at , drawing on 30+ years across multiple Chicago-area craniofacial teams (Lurie Children's, UI Health, Advocate Lutheran General) — a longitudinal view of how orthodontic planning integrates with surgical and prosthetic care.

🦷 SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT: Dr. Chad Purnell
Distraction osteogenesis. Patient-specific implants. Microsurgery. Now add AI and extended reality to the mix — craniofacial surgery is entering a new paradigm.
Dr. Purnell (Head of Craniofacial Surgery, University of Illinois Chicago and Shriners Children's Chicago) traces the evolution of craniofacial surgery from its 1980s origins through today's convergence of microsurgery, distraction, and patient-specific implants — including open questions on stability in mandibular distraction.

🦷 SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT: Dr. Richard Cardoso & Holly McMillan, MCD, CCC-SLP, LMP, CLT
Maximum interocclusal opening (MIO) alone doesn't tell the whole story. This talk proposes a better one — from two disciplines that see trismus differently.
Dr. Cardoso and Holly McMillan (Co-Directors, MD Anderson Interdisciplinary Trismus Clinic) bring "A New Framework for Trismus in Head and Neck Cancer: Mechanism, Measurement, and Grading" — 5 years of retrospective data (2020–2025) and a clinically meaningful grading scale that accounts for lymphedema, fibrosis, and patient experience, not just MIO.

🦷 SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT: Ashley Heidtmann, MS, CCC-SLP, CLT
Trismus, lymphedema, ORN, radiation fibrosis — they don't show up one at a time, and they don't stay in their own lane.
Ashley Heidtmann (RUSH MD Anderson Cancer Center) presents "Working Together to Restore Function in Head and Neck Cancer: The Speech-Language Pathologist–Maxillofacial Prosthodontist Partnership" at — a practical model for coordinating SLP and prosthodontic care, from pre-prosthetic manual therapy to VFSS/FEES-guided prosthetic refinement.
If obturators, speech bulbs, or glossectomy prostheses in your practice are getting complicated by trismus or ORN precautions, this is the collaborative framework worth hearing.

🦷 SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT: Dr. Karen Choi
HPV-associated oropharyngeal carcinoma incidence is now exceeding HPV-associated cervical
cancer — and the treatment landscape is shifting fast with transoral robotic surgery, ctDNA
surveillance, and immunotherapy.
Dr. Choi presents "HPV-Associated Oropharyngeal Carcinoma and the Evolving Landscape
in Treatment of Head and Neck Cancers" at — reviewing the landmark trials
that shaped current management and the open questions still ahead.
