Our final scholarship recipient for this year is Caleb Smith of Lehi, Utah. Caleb is a descendant of George W. Smith through his son, George Fred Smith. He attended Skyridge High School and participated in Football and Basketball. He is attending Utah Valley University majoring in Aviation.

Caleb wrote his essay on George William Smith, his 4th great grandfather. He wrote that George represents more than just a name on our family tree. His commitment to faith, family ,and endurance during a time of major transformation has given him a deep appreciation for the sacrifices that built the foundation he stands on today. "George's life reminds me that faith and persistence matter. George's choices, influenced by a strong religious conviction and a desire for something greater, opened the doors for the generations that followed." "I want my future children to know that they come from a long line of resilient, faith-filled people".

Caleb concluded his essay with these words, "George William Smith has impacted my life by linking me to a meaningful past and guiding me toward a hopeful future. His quiet strength and faithful legacy continue to echo through time and I will carry them with me for the rest of my life. As I have read about and studied my ancestors I have gained a new level of appreciation for what they have done for me. I have a new understanding of the name that I have, and I now know what a huge blessing my family has been to me."

Our fifth scholarship recipient is Seth Louis Secretan from Raymond, Alberta, Canada. Seth attended Raymond High School and will be attending MacEwan University majoring in Chemistry. Seth is a descendant of George W. Smith through his daughter Sabrina Catherine Smith Lamb.

He wrote his essay on his 2nd great-grandmother, Maria Elizabeth Nelson Lamb: An Example of Charity. We define charity as the pure love of Christ. President Russell M. Nelson has said, "Charity is a principal characteristic of a true follower of Jesus Christ". Seth, in his research, turned to Maria as the best example of conveying to others that they can receive such divine love. He cites descriptions of Maria from two of his daughters. Her daughter, Grace Lamb, wrote, "My mother is calm, quiet, patient, and loving to everyone".
Another daughter, Lola Lamb, described Great Grandma Lamb as the nearest thing to an angel this world will ever see."

In his own life he states, "From time to time, animosity, pride, and prejudice serve as roadblocks when I act on charity. Great Grandma Lamb's demonstration of charity becomes a lesson to just serve simply, and that would be enough for God and others", Seth closed his essay with these words, "My Great Grandma Maria Lamb has shown me how charity should be an integral part of my life. Her example solidifies the need for charity while performing our responsibilities in our community. Her acts of service present me with the opportunities to get past the roadblocks of pride, animosity, and prejudice. Her willingness to follow God's guidance on how and whom to serve has led me to do the same. That is what I want to be and follow her example in ministering, patience, and like her daughter said, "loving everyone"".

Eve concluded her essay with these words, "I am grateful for the chance to acknowledge what this great ancestor has done for me. It is no accident that I enjoy the opportunities that I have today. By remembering all of the wonderful people who have preceding me, I hope to be able to be even better at carrying on their goodness to positively impact the lives of many more generations to come."

Richard loved University of Utah Sports and Utah Jazz basketball and Spencer is a die hard Utah Sports fan as well. Spencer wrote that he shared Richard's love of music, hard work and faith as well. He concluded his essay with these words, "His love for sports, his work ethic, his faith, and love of music have shaped the kind of person I'm becoming. Even though we never met, he's had a real impact on my life-and for that, I'm grateful. He may be gone, but his influence keeps showing up-in what I love, what I value, and who I aim to be."

Jonathan wrote his essay on his grandfather, Junius Leo Bennion who he said left a "legacy of faith, fun, and an in satiable sweet tooth". He had fond memories of Sunday afternoon visits with his grandparents and enjoying a bowl of ice cream or warm popcorn. Near the end of his grandfather's life Jonathan was asked to help him with some basic needs on a daily basis. Jonathan, though a little reluctant at first, said, "I changed deeply during that time. I am more humble and have an expanded definition of what helping others looks like. His example to me continues to inspire me to serve others, share good humor, and seek to be humble."
