Getting married? Here's exactly when to whiten your teeth.

For most brides, we recommend two to three weeks before the big day. Two reasons. First, whitening can cause some temporary sensitivity, and nobody wants to deal with that at their own wedding. Second, the color needs a little time to settle into a natural looking white instead of a fresh, too bright shade.

The catch is that everything has to be healthy first. If your last cleaning was three years ago and the wedding is in four weeks, we have some catching up to do before we whiten anything.

Before you glue anything onto your teeth, read this.

Any foreign object adhered to a tooth creates a new little home for bacteria to collect. And if your decay risk is already on the higher side, adding that can push it even higher. At that point, you're doing more damage than good.

It's the kind of thing that looks harmless and feels harmless, right up until it isn't. We'd rather you know the trade off before you commit.

So much of what we do is judgment built on information. Your medical history, your home habits, your diet, your decay risk on a scale of 1 to 20, your gum health, your x-rays, your bite, even whether you bit your nails as a kid. All of it shapes the plan.

We're all trained differently and we all practice differently. Honestly, after 13 years, even the way I practice has changed with experience. What I can promise is that I'll reason it out, explain your options, and let you make the call.
