For many patients, wisdom teeth removal is their first surgical procedure, and it's completely normal to have questions about what to expect.

Our oral and maxillofacial surgeons have specialized training in anesthesia and offer moderate and deep sedation options based on each patient's medical history and surgical needs.

For patients receiving IV sedation, laughing gas may be used to help them relax before the IV is placed. Sedation medications are then administered through the IV, helping patients remain comfortable throughout their procedure.

We’re excited to welcome Dr. Michael Markiewicz to the CCOFS team!

Dr. Markiewicz is now seeing patients at our 📍Rock Hill, SC office as well as other offices throughout the greater Charlotte region, bringing extensive expertise in oral and maxillofacial surgery, pediatric craniofacial surgery, and head and neck reconstruction.

As a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Markiewicz is one of a small number of surgeons nationwide with specialized training and experience in cleft and craniofacial surgery, corrective jaw surgery, and head and neck oncologic and microvascular reconstructive surgery. His expertise includes treating children and adults with complex facial and jaw conditions, cleft lip and palate, facial trauma, and head and neck tumors.

Dr. Markiewicz earned degrees from the University at Buffalo, Harvard University, and Oregon Health & Science University, followed by two advanced surgical fellowships in pediatric craniomaxillofacial surgery and head and neck cancer and reconstruction.

Beyond his clinical practice, he has contributed to more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, co-edited 5 textbooks, and has written dozens of book chapters, and is actively involved in surgical education and research.

Dr. Markiewicz is passionate about understanding each patient's individual goals and helping improve both facial function and appearance through personalized surgical care.

Why might you need bone grafting before getting a dental implant?

Dental implants need a strong, healthy foundation of jawbone to support them. While some patients have enough bone for an implant to be placed right away, others may have experienced bone loss over time or may not have sufficient bone in the area where the implant is needed.

That's where bone grafting comes in.

Bone grafting helps rebuild or restore bone in the jaw, creating a more stable foundation for future implant placement. Once the graft has healed, the dental implant can be placed and eventually restored with a crown.

What happens if a tooth extraction creates an opening into your sinus cavity?

The roots of your upper molars can sit very close to the maxillary sinus. During an extraction, an opening can sometimes develop between the mouth and sinus cavity, known as a sinus perforation.

Dr. John Wessel, oral and maxillofacial surgeon at Carolinas Center for Oral & Facial Surgery in 📍Rock Hill, SC, recently treated a patient who developed a large, approximately 15 mm sinus opening following multiple upper tooth extractions.

Because of its size, Dr. Wessel used platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), a material created from the patient's own blood, to help support healing. PRF acts as a type of "biologic band-aid," providing a natural framework for tissue repair.

While smaller openings may heal on their own, larger perforations often require surgical treatment to reduce the risk of infection and other complications.

What’s the right age to have your wisdom teeth removed?

It’s one of the most common questions Dr. John Wessel from our 📍 Rock Hill, SC office hears from patients and parents. While there isn’t one perfect age for everyone, wisdom teeth are often evaluated between ages 15–18, when we can assess how the teeth and roots are developing and determine whether removal is recommended.

When removal is recommended, taking wisdom teeth out at a younger age can often mean an easier procedure and recovery because the roots may not be fully developed and the surrounding bone is typically less dense.
