"If a child is mouth breathing that leads to local inflammation, inflammation then leads to tonsillar enlargement. As the tonsils enlarge, we see worsening of poor nasal breathing. We see more mouth breathing, clinically. We see an increase in upper airway resistance. This further increases systemic inflammation, increases postural maladaptations, and then the cycle continues with increased unhealthy oral facial growth."
"As an orthodontist, our role in the interdisciplinary team is to help identify some of these patterns early and with an interdisciplinary treatment plan working with sleep medicine, an ENT, an allergist, a pediatrician, and a pediatric dentist, we can hopefully change the course of skeletal growth and redirect growth."
