Dental Caries: A Silent Global Health Crisis
Dental caries is not just a dental issue-it is the most prevalent disease worldwide, affecting more than 2.6 billion people across all age groups. Despite being largely preventable, tooth decay continues to burden health systems, reduce quality of life, and widen health inequalities, especially in low- and middle-income countries.
Unchecked caries leads to pain, infection, difficulty in eating, missed school and workdays, and increased healthcare costs. In children, it affects growth and learning; in adults, it compromises productivity and systemic health.
The causes are well known:
High sugar consumption
Poor oral hygiene practices
Limited access to preventive dental care
Lack of public awareness
The solution lies not only in treatment but in prevention, education, and policy-level action. Community fluoride programs, early screenings, dietary counseling, and integration of oral health into primary healthcare can dramatically reduce this global burden.
Oral health is not a luxury-it is a basic human right.
Addressing dental caries is essential for achieving overall health and well-being worldwide.
