The Rising Cases of Ebola Virus in Ituri Province that Can Spread Internationally
Orthoebolavirus zairense or Zaire ebolavirus, more commonly known as Ebola Virus is a serious or deadly disease that causes severe symptoms including sudden high fever, intense muscle pain, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, and in advanced stages, internal or external bleeding. It spreads easily and is a major health threat that can affect people far beyond local areas.
Right now, cases are rising fast at Ituri, Province, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
As of May 16 2026, health officials recorded 8 laboratory-confirmed cases, 246 suspected cases, and 80 suspected deaths. These cases have been found across at least three key health zones: Bunia, Rwampara, and Mongbwalu. The rise started in early May 2026, and the outbreak was officially confirmed on May 15, 2026
Health Experts say this increase happens because of deforestation and mining. These activities destroy the natural homes of wild animals like fruit bats and primates, which carry the Ebola virus. The animals move closer to villages and work areas, so people have more contact with them. This makes it easier for the virus to pass from animals to humans.
Some people face a much higher risk of getting infected. Most cases are among residents of Ituri Province, especially those who are aged 20 to 39 years old. Travelers moving in and out of the region are also at risk, as well as healthcare workers who care for patients, since they regularly come into close contact with the virus.
Ebola Virus spread in three main ways: from infected animals to humans, from person to person through close contact with body fluids, and across borders. Infected people do not feel sick right away. Symptoms can take 2 to 21 days to appear. During this period, they may travel to other regions or countries without knowing they carry the virus, making international spread a real risk.
Health Authorities are now working hard to control the situation. Response efforts include tracing people who have been in contact with patients, isolating those who are sick, educating communities on how to stay safe and prevent further spread.
