More and more TMJ Disorder patients discover Ortiz Dental Clinic & TMJ Center for a faster and reliable relief in their TMJ pain that is accompanied by persistint migraine, neck, shoulder and back pain.

The patient below was treated from another dentist for 14 months and the pain she suffered did not improve but instead she suffered from depression and insomnia. She disclosed that some of the patients from her former dentist are already there for 2 to 5 years and still thei pains are the same.

That is when she decided to look for another TMJ Dentist, since she don't want to endure another month of suffering and be like the other patients who stick to no relief treatment.

She is now on her first month of treatment and therapy ans is very happy that her anxiety, neck, shoulder and back pain is no longer bothering her. Her sleep is now back to normal and her depression gone. She no longer take pills for them.

How is the TMJ connected to ear pressure and eye pain?

Ear pressure (stuffiness, itching, blocks, vertigo) and Ear pain (otalgia - dull or lancing) may both be caused due to a TMJ dysfunction. Patients would generally meet up an ENT for these issues. If the ENT clears the case stating there was no infection or any other ENT related problems, then the next causal possibility would be the TMJ.

Diagnosis is key.

Ear pressure and ear pain are both physiologically connected symptoms to TMJ dysfunction.

There is a canal that connects the middle ear to the airway (throat region), known as the Eustachian Tube. It regulates the pressure differences on either side of the ear to maintain balance. This tube is controlled by muscles that are supplied by the Trigeminal Nerve. TMJ dysfunction leads to Trigeminal Nerve disorders that then leads to muscles tonicity issues supplied by the nerve. So, if the TMJ is in perfect muscular balance, the Eustachian tube muscles also harmonise with each other and hence end up not causing build up of pressure in the ear.

20% of humans have a vestigeal ligament that connects the TMJ to the middle ear known as the DiscoMalleolar Ligament. Any change in the lower jaw position will exert unwanted pressure on the ligament and hence the middle ear leading to pain. Relaxing the muscles controlling the jaw.

Your tongue is a major player in your facial appearance & dental alignment. The tongue’s form & function should be part of a holistic mouth checkup.

A normal tongue is agile & free to move upward and backward to serve Nature’s palatal expander. An unrestricted tongue is a best-kept secret to a fully-developed face with high cheek bones & naturally straight teeth.

On the other hand, tongue tie is a handicap restricting the tongue to the floor of the mouth, keeping it from expanding the palate. Ankyloglossia, the medical term for tongue tie, means the tongue is anchored to the floor of the mouth by a stiff cord (lingual frenum).

The tongue plays a big role in life from very start. If you are an exhausted mother with a restless & inconsolable baby, consider the tongue as a possible cause.

If the tongue tie condition is recognized & treated early with Myo-Functional Therapy, the tongue is free to follow The Law of Form and Function. Then normal dental-facial development can resume.

If allowed to persist, tongue tie can lead to nursing and weaning difficulties, tongue thrusting, weak lips, mouth breathing, dysfunctional swallows, which in turn can impair ideal dental-facial development and create medical-dental complications with many whole body symptoms.

Left untreated, tongue tie forces other muscles to over-compensate. Long term consequences of tongue tie can contribute to:

✅ Malocclusion, crowded/crooked teeth and facial disharmony requiring braces, surgery, or regular chiropractic or massage treatment

✅ Under-development of the upper jaw and a flat mid-face

✅ Over-development of the lower jaw contributing to a “crescent moon” profile

✅ Progressive crowding or spreading of the upper and/or lower front teeth

✅ Relapse after orthodontic treatment (braces)
Facial disharmony: flat mid-face, long-and-narrow “horsey” face, squat bull-dog face

✅ Snoring, sleep apnea, teeth grinding, and associated medical-dental costs

TMJ Dysfunction and Sleep Breathing Disorders have an effect on many aspects of your health and therefore your quality of life.

The temporo-mandibular joint is responsible for all the movements of the jaw. Injury, cartilage damage, degeneration and arthritis in this joint can lead to pain and dysfunction. Potential causes include trauma to the face or neck, clenching and grinding the teeth overloading the joints or muscles, allergies, enlarged tonsils, or uneven jaw growth as a child.

TMD SYMPTOMS • Ear Pain • Headaches • Neck aches • Migraines • Pain in the Jaw or Jaw Muscles • Difficulty Opening/Closing the Mouth • Clicking/Popping • Sensitive Teeth • Grinding/Clenching Teeth

OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea) occurs during sleep when the bodyʼs muscles relax, allowing the tongue to fall back, blocking the throat and reducing air to the lungs. The brain panics, raises blood pressure and triggers internal “alarms” to start breathing, often with a gasp or snort commonly known as snoring. The brain goes back to sleep and the obstruction cycle happens again. The more often you obstruct, the more your airway is blocked and the heart is stressed.

OSA SYMPTOMS • Snoring • Intermittent Pauses in Breathing During Sleep • Abrupt Awakenings with Shortness of Breath • Restless Sleeper • Night Sweats • Frequent Nighttime Urination • Headaches • Neck aches • Dry Mouth or Throat • Excessive Fatigue • Grinding of Teeth • Jaw (TMJ) Pain or Clicking • Daytime Sleepiness • Difficulty Concentrating

Grinding Teeth and TMJ Disorder connection!

Do you have restless sleep or grind your teeth?

Teeth grinding often accompanies a set of other symptoms, including:

- Low blood pressure

- Chronic stuffy nose

- Temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD)

- Headaches or migraines

- Irritable bowel syndrome

- Tension headache

- Hyperventilation syndrome

- Chronic fatigue syndrome

- Cold feet and hands

- Depression or anxiety

- Brain fog, daytime sleepiness

- Allergies, skin rashes

Is breathing affecting your health?

There is a common presentation I see in patients who experience chronic levels of breathing related stress.

It’s fight or flight mode, and it’s an incredibly difficult state to live in.

Signs that your nervous system is in ‘fight’ mode and note ‘rest’ mode are:

• Feeling anxious
• Difficulty sleeping
• Feeling tired all the time
• Digestive issues
• Cold hands and feet
• Frequent sickness
• Headaches, jaw pain or teeth grinding.

It’s a broad set of symptoms and most experience it differently.

So what’s the commonality?

Mouth breathing, is one of the worst ways we can stress the body. It deprives the brain of oxygen and also the deep relaxing neural pathways that our breath can activate.

Remember that breathing is the connection between your conscious and unconscious mind.

The brain controls the heart directly through branches of the ‘autonomic’ nerve system.

Heart rate, oxygen delivery and even immune response is managed with how you breathe.

During sleep, breathing in particular needs to be calm so that the brain can transverse through the complete sleep cycle, the soothing path of the unconscious mind. During these periods the body is literally cleaning every organ system out.

Is mouth breathing a problem for you?

If you sleep with uour mouth open is a definite sign.

Do you suffer from anxiety that is difficult to shake?
