PERIODONTITIS

Periodontitis simply means inflammation of the periodontium.
The periodontium refers to the supporting tissues of the tooth (Gum, alveolar bones, connecting fibers).

One of the most common human diseases, accounting for about 1.5 million cases per year in Nigeria

Periodontitis is primarily a bacterial disease. These bacteria are naturally present in the mouth, they become harmful when the conditions are right for them to increase dramatically in number.

This happens when a layer of bacteria & food debris is left undisturbed on the teeth especially in areas that are hard to clean such as in between the teeth and the areas covered by the cheeks.

Periodontitis frequently begins with gingivitis, which may be difficult to notice.

However, most individuals are prompted to the problem when they notice bleeding from their gums especially when they brush or just after waking up.
Others notice that their teeth seem to have changed positions slightly or persistent bad breath. Another sign is mobile teeth.

How can it be prevented ?

1. Regular twice daily brushing (morning and last thing at night) with a soft/medium bristled brush with a fluoride containing toothpaste.

2. Regular scaling and polishing (at least once a year)

3. Healthy diets (more fruits and vegetables).

4. Avoid using toothpicks as this further creates gap between teeth & makes food particles lodge there creating more problems. Instead, use a dental floss to remove any food debris stuck in between the teeth.

5. Use of Antibacterial mouthwashes are also helpful.

Risk factors my include; To***co use, stress, Diabetes mellitus, etc
