We recently came across a post where a mother was asking for advice on how to remove the hard, yellowish-brown buildup on her child’s teeth. While many offered helpful suggestions, one comment stood out for the wrong reasons: "Use the tip of knife to remove it."
Please, if you ever see this advice, do not try it. Attempting to scrape your child's teeth with a kitchen knife, safety pin, or any sharp household object is incredibly dangerous.
That hard, crusty layer near the gumline is called Dental Calculus (commonly known as Tartar).
It starts as a plaque that forms on our teeth daily. If plaque isn't brushed away properly, it mixes with the natural minerals in our saliva and calcifies. It turns into a porous, stone-like substance attached directly to the tooth.
Because tartar is calcified, it bonds tightly to the tooth structure. Trying to force it off with a DIY tool can lead to ;
✅ Permanent Enamel Damage: Your tooth enamel is the hardest substance in your body, but it can be scratched and chipped. Once you scratch your enamel with a metal blade, it does not grow back, leaving the tooth permanently vulnerable to decay and extreme sensitivity.
✅ Severe Gum Injury: The gums are highly vascular (full of blood vessels). One tiny slip with a knife can slice the gum tissue, leading to heavy bleeding and severe pain.
✅ High Risk of Infection: Household objects harbor millions of bacteria. Introducing a knife into a bleeding gum line is a fast track to painful oral infections.
You cannot remove tartar with a toothbrush, and you certainly shouldn't use a knife. The only safe way to remove it is by visiting a dentist for a procedure called Scaling and Polishing.
A dentist uses specialized, sterilized instruments, such as ultrasonic scalers to remove them. These tools use high-frequency micro-vibrations and a gentle stream of water to safely shatter and wash away the calculus without harming the tooth enamel underneath.
