Most people only think about their teeth. But your gums are just as important and they are constantly giving you signals that something is not right.

Here are four warning signs that your gums are trying to tell you something.

The first is bleeding when you brush. A lot of people think this is normal or that they are just brushing too hard. It is not. Bleeding gums is one of the earliest signs of gum inflammation and infection.

The second is gums that look red and swollen. Healthy gums should be pink and firm. If yours look puffy, dark red, or feel tender when you touch them, that is a sign something is going on underneath.

The third is gums that are pulling away from your teeth. This is called gum recession and it is a serious warning sign. When gums pull back, the root of your tooth becomes exposed and that leads to sensitivity, infection, and eventually tooth loss if not treated.

The fourth is the overall health of your gums. If you have been noticing bad breath that does not go away even after brushing, or your teeth feel loose or have shifted, your gums may already be in a more advanced stage of disease.

None of these should be ignored. The good news is that gum problems caught early are very treatable. The longer you wait the more complicated and costly the treatment becomes.
