Missing a tooth for years? It may not be too late for an implant. 🦷

When a tooth has been missing for a long time, the situation can change — but that doesn’t automatically mean a dental implant is no longer possible.

Over time, the bone may reduce, neighbouring teeth can shift, and the available space may change. That’s why implant planning involves much more than simply looking at the missing tooth.

We assess:

🦷 Bone — is there enough bone for implant placement?
🦷 Bite — how will the implant function with your existing teeth?
🦷 Space — has the position of the neighbouring teeth changed?
🦷 Overall treatment plan — what will give you a stable, functional and natural-looking result?

Sometimes the treatment is straightforward. Sometimes additional procedures or a different treatment approach may be needed.

The first step is a proper assessment — not assuming that it's too late.

A TMJ splint ceases to be a placebo the moment you understand what true accuracy means.

Michigan splints, neuromuscular orthotics and other TMJD appliances may follow different philosophies, but accuracy remains important across approaches.

The laboratory can fabricate the appliance. The real clinical skill comes in evaluating how it functions for that particular patient and making precise adjustments when needed.

Learning why an adjustment is needed—not simply how to make one—is an important part of developing clinical judgement in TMJD care.

The appliance can be fabricated. The art lies in getting the adjustment right.

Does your child snore, sleep with their mouth open, wake up tired, drool on the pillow, grind their teeth, or keep their lips apart at rest?

Sometimes, these signs can be clues that deserve a closer look at how a child breathes, sleeps and functions — not just how their teeth look.

Other things such as crowded teeth, low tongue posture, tongue thrusting, difficulty eating or persistent speech difficulties may also be worth noting when they occur alongside other signs.

But here’s the important part: one sign does not diagnose an airway or breathing problem. These features can have different causes, and not every child with mouth breathing has a sleep-related breathing disorder.

That’s why I prefer to ask:

Why is the child mouth breathing?
How is the child sleeping?
Where does the tongue rest?
Is nasal breathing comfortable?
Are there other factors affecting oral and facial development?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that dental professionals screen for signs and symptoms that may indicate sleep-related breathing disorders and refer children for appropriate medical evaluation when indicated.

So, rather than simply saying “Stop breathing through your mouth,” let's understand why it is happening.

Because when we look at a growing child, the teeth are only one part of the picture. 🦷👃🏻💤

Mouth breathing in children: when is it more than a habit? 👃🏻

Persistent mouth breathing in kids can sometimes be associated with nasal obstruction, allergies, disturbed sleep, snoring, oral health changes, and altered facial and jaw development.

If your child frequently:
• breathes through the mouth
• sleeps with their mouth open
• snores
• has a blocked or stuffy nose
• wakes up tired

…it may be worth understanding why nasal breathing is difficult rather than simply asking the child to “keep their mouth closed.”

Early identification of the underlying cause can help guide the right care.
