The report, "Time to take gum disease seriously": The societal and economic impact of periodontitis, was published on June 14 and explains how more effective prevention of gum disease could save billions in healthcare costs and lead to healthier lives. The six countries included in the study are France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and the UK.
As the report makes clear, periodontitis is largely preventable with good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups. However, it shows how in Western Europe little progress has been made in the prevention and management of periodontitis, with prevalence remaining largely unchanged over the last 25 years. One key factor highlighted by the report is that many people visit a dentist only when they have a problem and avoid regular appointments because of the cost.

Smile Wisdom:

Is fresh fruit good for your teeth?

The answer is - Yes and No.
If eaten in moderation - lets say about five portions per day, fresh fruit won't be a problem.
Fruits contain intrinsic sugars and being in the fruit it is not harmful to the tooth structure.
Plus there is the added benefit of fibre, which is briliant for gut health.
However, eating considerable amount of acidic fruits on regular basis, such as citric fruit or apples, can and may cause erosion.

Erosion? One could ask....
Yes - it is another form of lesion, where enamel is etched away.....

Thank you for your time to read our notes,

Till next time,

Your Team at the Richmond Dental Centre

Food for Thought:
The Tooth Care Conundrum; just like our bodies need nutrients and vitamins to thrive, the same applies to our teeth. Teeth are alive on the inside so the best nutrition is needed to keep them well. This will include calcium and fat soluble vitamins ....

WHAT OUR PATIENTS WANT TO KNOW……

Dentistry is one of the many conversations about wellness in January.

While we continue treating patients in our surgery, we have also provided many telephonic and video appointments.

We thought it would be useful to publish some general oral health essentials, as we have realised that, in the absence of a typical work routine, social distancing and regular face to face appointments, less care tends to be taken of teeth and gums:

Brush Work: the most Important message is: Brush Please ! Twice - not once - a day to keep dental biofilm in check. And keep it nice and slooow please - at least 2 minutes of brushing each time.

2. Choices, Choices: in general we recommend Fluoride tooth pastes. Numerous recent studies show that fluoride can help in reducing the loss of important minerals from the tooth structure. To be most effective, when you finish brushing, just spit out the excess of the fluoride toothpaste but do not rinse your mouth with water. You only need a little bit!

3. In Betweeners: Don’t forget to clean between the teeth with the aid of either floss or interdental brushes. And do it daily please. Food that gets stuck between teeth can lead to bleeding, gum disease, caries and bad breath.

3. Shrink the sugar: Try reducing the frequency of eating sweets, soft drinks, candies. Please read the labels carefully to watch out for hidden sugars such as fructose, lactose. Some medicines contain sugars too.

4. Finally, to end on a positive note, not every tooth cavity needs to be filled. That’s why if you spot a change on the tooth surface, call the surgery. We might be able to advise you on the phone how to best deal with it.

Till next time, thank you for reading this.

From next week we are going to start a new series of posts called Focus on Prevention where we will present current knowledge on Prevention in Dental Health and how it is linked to systemic health. Current health crisis has taught us the need to focus on prevention more than ever.

And below you will see a drawing by our friend, Gigi, an amazing young artist from the area. Few days ago the drawing has won most votes under "Flower Drawing 12 years and under in Bedford Park Festival and has been also voted a winner in Children's Community Art Gallery - we are so proud of her achievement !!! Congratulations Gigi 😀

We find that Plaque Disclosing Tablets are Useful Educational Tool. Why?
Bacterial plaque is sticky and almost invisible to the naked eye and contains lots and lots of organisms that adhere to the teeth. The little blue or pink disclosing tablets are the simplest way to teach both the children and their parents about the presence of microorganisms on the tooth surface. The dye in the tablet reveals the plaque. The two -tone disclosing tablets are also available - and these can identify new or mature plaque and acid-producing oral biofilms.
If you are not sure of your child is brushing well and concerned about their teeth and gums in general you can schedule an appointment with one of our therapists and hygienists at convenient times after school and on Saturdays too. For an appointment contact one of our lovely reception team on 020 3441 8182.
