When we talk about gut health, most people think of the stomach — not the gums. But emerging research shows a powerful link between the two, known as the gum–gut axis.⁠

What’s the Gum–Gut Axis?⁠
It’s the two-way relationship between the bacteria in your mouth and the bacteria in your gut. According to the 2025 Sunstar GUM White Paper, the oral microbiome is the second most diverse in the body after the gut — and the two constantly influence each other through saliva, swallowing, and immune responses.⁠

We’d love to welcome you to a morning masterclass this Saturday, 15th November, in Richmond — designed specifically for general dentists who want to strengthen their understanding of soft tissue management around implants.

Whether or not you place implants yourself, this session will give you valuable insight into assessing patient risk, recognising aesthetic challenges, and understanding why things sometimes go wrong — like recession or visible dark margins. We’ll focus on a topic often overlooked: implant therapy in patients with a history of periodontal disease.

Led by experienced clinicians, the session will explore:

How to assess and plan cases in perio-compromised patients

What soft tissue really needs to survive, thrive and look natural

Practical techniques to enhance soft tissue volume and aesthetics around implants or pontic sites

When and how to intervene surgically to establish a more predictable foundation for implants

Big congratulations to Dr Bruno Delaunay on officially becoming a Registered Specialist in Periodontics with the GDC! 🦷👏

Bruno’s journey has included years of intensive training, a Master’s from the Eastman Dental Institute, and Membership in Periodontics with the Royal College of Surgeons.

He is now formally recognised as a highly skilled expert in gum disease and implant dentistry—and we couldn’t be prouder.

We’re also excited to say that with Bruno’s registration, we now have 4 Specialist Periodontists under one roof at Perio & Implants Richmond!

A Must-Read for GDPs!

This month, we’re highlighting a fascinating periodontal case that every general dentist should be aware of.

A 61-year-old patient presented with advanced periodontal disease that was unresponsive to hygienist treatment, alongside severe gingival overgrowth.

After a thorough assessment, we identified a critical link between his condition and long-term use of Amlodipine, a common calcium channel blocker.

Through a combination of non-surgical periodontal therapy, oral hygiene improvements, and collaboration with the patient’s GP, we achieved remarkable results—with significant gum health improvement in just two months!

Why This Case Matters

1- Recognising the impact of medications (Amlodipine and others) on gingival health
2- Understanding the importance of early intervention and referral
3- Practical management tips for drug-induced gingival hyperplasia.

This case highlights the importance of medical-dental collaboration and the value of early periodontal intervention. If you have patients presenting with similar symptoms, this is a must-read!
