Tartar/calculus cleaning 🦷✨

I could watch this ALL DAY 😮‍💨🦷

But what is actually being removed here?

That hard build-up is calculus, also called tartar.

Plaque starts off soft, but if it isn’t removed effectively, minerals in your saliva can cause it to harden onto the teeth. Once it has mineralised like this, your toothbrush isn’t going to simply brush it away.

That’s where your dentist or hygienist comes in 🪥✨

And yes… removing a giant piece of calculus in one go is every bit as satisfying for us as it looks 😂

Be honest: satisfying or disgusting? 👇

“I’m scared to open my mouth in case my breath smells” 😭💨

As a dentist… there are MUCH better ways to get an idea of what your breath smells like than doing this: 👋😮‍💨

Breathing into your hand and immediately smelling it isn’t particularly useful.

And if you have things like:

👅 a coated tongue
🧵 not cleaning between your teeth
💧 dry mouth
⚪ tonsil stones

…bad breath becomes much more likely.

A lot of oral malodour is associated with volatile sulphur compounds (VSCs) produced by bacteria in the mouth.

Want a slightly brutal home check? 😭

🧵 Floss between your back teeth and smell the floss afterwards.

OR…

👅 Use a tongue scraper towards the back of your tongue and smell what comes off it.

Neither is a proper diagnostic test, but they can give you a much better clue than breathing into your palm 😂

And if bad breath persists despite good brushing, interdental cleaning and tongue cleaning, speak to your dentist rather than just masking it with mints.

Be honest… are you going to smell your floss tonight? 😭👇

Dentists spend a surprising amount of time telling people NOT to file their own teeth at home.

But there’s an important difference here 👇

Those little bumps on the edges of newly erupted front teeth are called mamelons. They’re completely normal and often gradually wear down over time.

If someone wants them altered, a dentist can assess:

🦷 the shape of the tooth
🦷 how much enamel is present
🦷 where the underlying dentine is
🦷 the bite and functional contacts
🦷 whether a small amount can be safely adjusted

Where appropriate, we can then make very small, controlled adjustments while remaining within a suitable thickness of enamel.

Understanding exactly what’s underneath what you’re removing is the important bit.

Dentist carefully reshaping enamel = ✅
DIY nail file in the bathroom = absolutely not ❌😭

Would you keep your mamelons or smooth them out? 👇

UFC fighter and his knocked-out tooth 🦷🥊

Hopefully he gets his tooth back… and it doesn’t end up as someone’s UFC souvenir 😭🦷

If an ADULT tooth gets completely knocked out, what you do next can make a huge difference to whether it can be saved.

🚨 Pick it up by the CROWN, not the root
🥛 If it’s dirty, gently rinse it in milk, saline or saliva — don’t scrub it
🦷 If possible, gently put it straight back into the socket
🥛 If you can’t, keep it in milk or saliva
🏃‍♂️ Get to an emergency dentist ASAP

And importantly: NEVER reinsert a baby tooth.

This is one of those things everyone should know BEFORE it happens.

Would you have known what to do? 👇

Pregnancy doesn’t just affect your body. It can affect your mouth too.

Which one caught you off guard?

If you’ve been pregnant before, what’s something nobody warned you about? 👇

Tag someone who’s expecting… they might thank you later.

Most cracked teeth don’t suddenly split in half.

They often start as a slow crack that gets a little worse every time you bite.

Your mouth usually gives you a few clues first. Flattening teeth from grinding, tiny chips, sensitivity, then pain when you bite… especially when you let go.

Catch it early and sometimes a mouthguard or strengthening the tooth with an onlay is enough.

Leave it too long and you could be looking at root canal treatment, a crown… or even losing the tooth.

Has your dentist ever pointed out tooth wear or cracks to you?

Everyone thinks the danger is the tooth.

It isn’t.

It’s where the infection can end up if you leave it.

If you’ve ever thought “the pain’s gone, it’ll be fine”… watch this.

And if you know someone who’s putting off the dentist because they’re “too busy”, send them this before they end up needing more than a dentist.

Which one surprised you the most?
