This blue sheet is a green flag at the dentist 👀

It’s called rubber dam.

And I know it looks weird, but honestly, it makes such a big difference.

We use it because the mouth is wet, full of saliva, and not exactly the easiest place to do precise work.

For things like white fillings, bonding and root canals, we need the tooth as clean and dry as possible.

Rubber dam helps keep saliva away, protects your tongue and cheek, and stops tiny bits of material or instruments going where they shouldn’t.

It also means we can work more accurately, with less contamination, and usually get a better seal.

So if your dentist uses this, don’t panic.

It usually means they’re trying to do the job properly.

Have you ever had this used before?

I hate bonded retainers 😬

Okay, not always.

But I do hate the way they’re often treated as a “permanent” solution.

Because clinically, they’re not fit and forget.

They can debond and feel sharp. They often need repairs or replacement. They make hygiene harder because you can’t floss normally, so interdental brushes become essential. They can collect plaque and tartar. And in some cases, bonded retainer syndrome can cause unwanted tooth movement if the wire bends or distorts.

That’s why I’m cautious with them.

But there are two situations where I still use them:

Lower front teeth, because there’s usually less biting force on the wire, so they may last longer, although hygiene still needs to be excellent.

Upper front spaces, especially midline diastemas, because these have a higher chance of relapse and reopening.

My rule: a bonded retainer can be useful, but it should be monitored like any other dental appliance.

It is not a guarantee. It is not maintenance-free.And it does not always replace removable retainers.

Would you choose bonded or removable retainers?
