To mark Mental Health Awareness Week, we asked our hygiene team to share the small things they do to support their mental wellbeing.

From getting outside in the morning light to movement, reading, screen-free time and creative hobbies, these little habits help our team reset, recharge and feel more grounded.

A gentle reminder that looking after your mental health can look different for everyone, and sometimes it’s the simplest moments that make the biggest difference.

Have you tried Tooth Angel UK yet?

We’ve been exploring their range of sustainable oral hygiene products, designed by dental professionals with both effectiveness and the environment in mind.

The toothbrush has a simple replaceable head system, making it a more sustainable option without changing the feel of your daily routine. This pairs really well with their fluoride and hydroxyapatite toothpaste.

The copper tongue scraper is another useful addition, helping to gently remove the biofilm and bacteria that can build up on the tongue and contribute to bad breath. A simple sweep from the back of the tongue forward can make a real difference to how fresh your mouth feels.

But the hero product for us is the refillable floss. So many people tell us they dislike flossing because the floss feels too thin, sharp or uncomfortable. This one is softer, made from recycled bottles, and has a texture that helps grip and remove plaque more effectively. The white colour also makes it easier to spot any bleeding, which can be an early sign that the gums need a little extra attention.

A thoughtful range for anyone looking to make their oral care routine more effective, comfortable and a little more sustainable too.

Is hands-free flossing too good to be true?

We're always curious about innovative tools that claim to make oral hygiene easier, and this one caught our attention after a patient with a broken arm reminded us just how tricky flossing can become when your usual routine is disrupted. It also got us thinking about how useful hands-free options could be for anyone navigating temporary injuries, reduced dexterity or physical conditions that make traditional flossing more difficult.

This led us to trial “G-Floss,” a hands-free device designed to be moved around the mouth using only your tongue and jaw.

While the concept of a hands-free solution is brilliant for those with limited mobility, the practical reality didn't quite hit the mark during our trial. The floss itself is incredibly small, with a cleaning surface roughly the size of a thin piece of thread, which left us questioning how much plaque it could actually dislodge compared to traditional methods.

The floss also tended to settle in one spot rather than navigate between all the teeth. Most importantly, we had concerns regarding the choking risk of such a small product. In fact, our trial ended with a bit of a scramble to ensure the floss didn't get stuck!

While we love seeing more inclusive designs, we feel this remains a very niche product that hasn't quite convinced us to make the switch yet, but we enjoyed giving it a go!! We’ll keep searching for the perfect accessible flossing solution, but for now, we're sticking to the tried-and-tested methods.

Have you ever wondered if your standard brushing routine is really reaching all of the areas where most oral bacteria live?

Think of the tongue a little like a deep-pile rug. It can harbour bacteria, food debris and dead cells, and because it is home to anaerobic bacteria, it is often one of the main sources of bad breath.

We’ve recently been trying a tongue paste by Pinkform, designed to target this specific biofilm. The formula contains cetylpyridinium chloride (an antibacterial ingredient often found in clinical-grade mouthwashes). This can be effective at neutralising bacteria, but it’s also worth noting that it may occasionally contribute to minor staining with daily use.

The application is simple: apply the paste for around 15 seconds, but our biggest tip is to use a separate brush for this step. This helps avoid transferring concentrated tongue bacteria onto the toothbrush you use for your teeth.

Once the paste has done its work, we’d recommend finishing with a good tongue scraper; ideally, stainless steel or copper options tend to feel more effective and last longer.

Taste-wise, it’s perfectly acceptable, but we’re still deciding whether it offers enough of a benefit to become a regular part of a standard routine. As always, we like to test products properly before giving a full professional recommendation.

Have you ever wondered what you can do for your teeth when you’re out for lunch or drinks and don't have a toothbrush to hand?

We are always looking for effective ways to maintain oral health between appointments, and we’ve recently been trialling Kaigum, a naturally derived chewing gum that fits perfectly into a busy lifestyle.

The range is made with birch tree xylitol and is completely free from petroleum derivatives, making it a more eco-friendly choice that even features sustainable packaging. Unlike traditional gums, the texture is pleasant and chewy without a hard, artificial outer shell, offering a more subtle and natural sweetness.

From a clinical perspective, the benefits of chewing for about twenty minutes have been proven significant by some studies, as the mechanical action of chewing can help to physically dislodge biofilm and disrupt plaque accumulation on the tooth surface.

By stimulating your natural saliva production, the gum helps to buffer and neutralise acids in the mouth, providing a gentle but effective layer of protection.

While we are impressed with its performance, we would always advise a little caution if you are someone who struggles with jaw clenching, grinding, or TMJ issues, as you'll want to avoid overstimulating the joint with constant chewing. It is all about finding that bespoke balance that supports your smile while respecting your individual needs.

The Hidden Cost of the Brush...

Most manual brushes are made from polypropylene plastic, which can take up to 500 years to decompose. Even then, they break down into microplastics that contaminate our water, soil, and wildlife.

With the average person disposing of over 300 toothbrushes in their lifetime, dental products create a consistent stream of plastic pollution.

Switching to a sustainable option with a compostable handle is one of the fastest ways to shrink your dental plastic footprint without compromising your clinical routine.

We’re sharing our honest thoughts on the Tooth Angel UK brush today. Their innovative click-and-replace toothbrush head reduces waste and makes it effortless to keep your brush fresh every 3 months.

The Mouth’s Silent Guardian...Saliva!

Saliva is truly the mouth’s natural superhero, acting as a constant first line of defence for your teeth. When everything is working correctly, it neutralises harmful acids and helps to remineralise your enamel, but without that steady flow, teeth can begin to decay at an alarming rate.

April is Sjögren’s Awareness Month, which is the perfect time to talk about what happens when that protection is taken away. Sjögren’s is an autoimmune condition that specifically targets moisture-producing glands, leaving the mouth vulnerable to cavities and gum disease.

It is common for people to be told to suck on lemon sweets or drink lemon water to try to stimulate some moisture, but this is actually quite a dangerous myth. Because there isn't enough saliva to buffer the acidity, the lemon juice can quickly destroy your enamel and cause irreversible damage.

Instead of reaching for something acidic, it is much safer to sip plain water throughout the day or use a sugar-free gum containing Xylitol to encourage flow. We also recommend asking us about a high-fluoride or hydroxyapatite toothpaste to give your teeth that extra layer of clinical protection that saliva usually provides.

If you've been struggling with a dry mouth, let's talk about it so we can find a bespoke routine that actually works for you. Give Reception a call on 020 7221 1680 to book an appointment to discuss with the hygiene team. The Kensington Dentist

In support of National Autism Awareness Month

Brushing doesn’t have to be a battle.

As a dental professional and a mother to two autistic children, I know first-hand that the 'standard' advice doesn't always work for neurodivergent smiles.

Bedtime routines and toothbrushing in particular can be a sensory minefield, and sometimes the best clinical advice is to simply lead with empathy.

I’ve put together 4 tips that changed everything for us at home, and for my patients here at @‌thekensingtondentist. My biggest takeaway?Connection over perfection.

Swipe through to see how we make oral hygiene a more predictable, sensory-friendly experience.

Do you have any tips that have worked for your family? I’d love to hear it in the comments! 👇
