It’s just a cleaning. It’s just a small cavity. It’s just a quick extraction. Listen to how often we say “just” in dentistry. We minimize our own work to make it sound easier, quicker, more acceptable. But think about it. Would a surgeon say, “It’s just a bypass?” Or would a lawyer say, “It’s just a lawsuit?” Of course not. Yet in dentistry, for some reason, even though we diagnose disease, prevent tooth loss, restore function, change how people eat, sleep, speak, and smile, we just call it “just.” And then we wonder why our patients cancel, why they don’t show up, why they don’t see the urgency. The truth is, we’ve basically downplayed it ourselves. Words really matter. If we present treatment as small, as optional, or insignificant, that is exactly how our patients will perceive it. So what you do is not just anything. It’s skilled, it’s clinical, and it’s impactful healthcare. So it’s time we started talking like we believe that.
