💕💚 Alpha Kappa Alpha & Mobile Health. 🚎
Did you know…?

In the 1930’s, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated created the Mississippi Health Project. Through this health initiative, the sorority provided mobile healthcare services to African Americans in rural Mississippi who did not have access to care due to segregation and the lingering socioeconomic impacts of slavery.

The Mississippi Health Project has been recognized as the first mobile health clinic in the United States. Today, the project continues to provide care to the underserved in the rural South and is used as a model for many mobile health clinics spanning America.

As a community health dentist, I am proud to be a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated - a sorority that values health equity, embraces innovation, and always serves with a smile.

Happy 115th Founders’ Day! 💕💚

: Don’t be so busy reminiscing on the past that you miss out on your current blessing. 😉

Today marks two (2) years since I first started working as a dentist. ✌🏽🥳

Immediately following my dental residency in New York City (NYC), I flew to rural South Carolina to begin my career as a dentist for a federally qualified health center. Serving underserved communities had always been (and still is) a passion of mine, but I must admit, transitioning from city life to country living wasn’t the easiest for me.

To be honest, the transition was a bit of a culture shock. I found myself constantly comparing my new city to my former. Every chance I got, I found a reason to fly back to NYC and reconnect myself with the city I fell in love with as a resident. But lo and behold, my routine visits to NYC were cut short . Where was I going to escape to now? 😩

Home. That’s where lol. 🤣

I spent more time in my new city, reconnected with local friends, and even allowed myself to spark new working relationships. The more time I invested into rural living, the more I realized that I probably didn’t embrace my new home initially because I simply never gave it a fair chance.

Now, whenever I leave work for the weekend, I focus less on flying away to recapture old feels. These days, I reflect more on my week, the impact my dental team has made on the lives of patients, and how much this rural area has fostered my maturity as a clinician.

🤔 Have you ever relocated for work? If so, how was your transition? ✈️

I feel blessed to be working rural and I know that in this season, this is where I need to be.

🥂 Cheers to two years! Praising God in advance for what’s to come. 🙌🏽🖤

P.S. Don’t get me wrong. I still love a good weekend trip. I actually visited NYC last weekend after a long hiatus 😂. Check out my stories to find out why this recent visit was one for the books. 👀

Fight for your dreams.🥊 ⤵️

🥊 Over the weekend, I read a Twitter thread that really hit home. It discussed how most of us know exactly what needs to be done to progress in life; however, a key obstacle prohibiting us from realizing our dreams is our own lack of .

Discipline. Discipline when it comes to health, personal life, work, spiritual growth, relationships, education… You name it.

Self discipline is what I will focus on this week. Yeah… It can be challenging and feel inconvenient, but our dreams are well worth the fight.

Are you willing to knockout old habits to reach your dreams?🤔💭

👀 Tune in to my story this week to see how I am working towards self discipline. Each day, I’ll be posting about a different aspect of life. Hey, I may even throw some daily motivation into the mix. 😏

Make it a great week, folks!

Happy Friday, beautiful people!

After a week filled with busyness and unwelcome news, let this be your reminder to take care of yourself.

There comes a time when we all need to take a step back and check in with ourselves. We must carve out time to nourish our bodies, sleep, and maintain mental health.

How do you plan to prioritize your wellness this weekend?

Turn to your neighbor, and say “NEIGHBOR... The REST of this week will be the BEST of this week.” 🙌🏽

I must admit, these last few months, I’ve found myself to be more pessimistic than ever before. There are days when I have woken up, rolled my eyes, and mentally asked myself “What terrible thing is going to happen today?”. This morning, I had to remind myself that there is power in what I speak and how I choose to think about situations.

So, for the rest of this week, I am challenging you all (and ultimately myself) to:
1. Speak life into a situation that may appear hopeless.
2. Think of one positive thing to take away from a seemingly negative reality.
3. Speak well over others, even those who you may not agree with.

Do you think we can accomplish those three things this week? I’m confident that we can!

Make it a great remainder of the week, everyone!

👋🏽 Hey y’all! Its Dr. Hair. It has been a while since I posted, so I wanted to share this photo from my days in general practice dental residency.

⏰ One of the key skills I took away from residency was time management. Though time management was emphasized with respect to procedures, it has definitely become a key skill that I employ outside of the operatory.

🚙 Each morning as I commute to work (about 60mins one way), I draft a mental “Things to Accomplish List.” I say “things to accomplish” because it doesn’t sound as daunting as a “to do list.”

📲 My list includes tasks that I need to work on while on my lunch break and following work. After my brainstorming session, I use Siri on my Apple device to schedule tasks for my calendar. I establish realistic time frames for completing tasks, then use my calendar as a checklist throughout the day. Having a checklist to reference helps me better manage my personal life, sewing projects (Sew & Suture), and work in an organized fashion.

👍🏽 Though I’m not a time management expert quite yet, I am seeing gradual improvement in my work-life balance.

🤔What are your favorite time management tools or routines?👇🏽
