another year older but just to reassure those much younger, it sounds like a scary age …but if you eat well, sleep and exercise , see your family and friends regularly and just have a laugh , you genuinely feel the same as you did in your 20s/30s.

My first Health integration and blood testing in dentistry course completed. !! A pilot course but ..
This has been a LOT of work to try and present the science of metabolic health , nutrition and understanding root cause disease in a way that relates to dentists but it’s one of those subjects that as you know more, you realise every single one of us should be taught this way and using this information to improve outcomes for patients.
A simple example is implant placement - deficient vit D status is some studies actually is a higher risk factor for failure than even smoking or perio - how many of us are testing routinely? Before and after placement ..There many examples of how we can use information we can gather quickly across various areas of dentistry , caries ,(hbA1c actually affect caries risk as well as perio ) , perio and even ortho that in the future will become standard approaches for better outcomes and the potential impacts on defence are enormous.

The goal is to help add a few principles , tests and patient education into any practice to massively improve outcomes, reduce failures, improve safety and benefit their health

Why? Well because the aligner companies generally try to encourage a “scan and send / we will do it all for you”mentality.

Understandable from their perspective as they want to get as many cases through the door as possible, but completely wrong for any dentist as not only are your records indefensible, but you also lack critical data that can help with a tailored diagnosis based prescription which can ensure perfect ortho restorative/ occlusal outcomes for that patient.

Look at how small treatment is .. and how large a lack of assessment , diagnosis and planning is and let’s face it the communication and consent is basically the same thing

If you are doing an aligner open evening, seeing 10 cases and banging them all off to the aligner company that day , you will not have done a proper assessment (and it’s likely your records are already indefensible.( not unless you are spending an hour on each patient)

You need to learn how to diagnose correctly and that should be checked via mentoring as well as your digital setups and treatment progression

UNDOING DENTISTRY
Took off another dentists recent “ composite bonding “……The biggest question is WHY do this in first place ??
Even if their result had been better i still have to ask WHY .. what is so wrong that you need to cover the labial surface of the anterior teeth?

We are meant to be HEALTH professionals.
We are meant to care, we are meant to do the right thing. It’s not hard.

Yet this is one of numerous cases over seen over the last few years walk in like this.

Genuinely, treating patients the way I would want my family to be treated, has over many years made my job less stressful, more satisfying and enjoyable.

This philosophy is a litmus test for me.

( replaced some edge bonding using the reverse triangle technique with Venus diamond (some polishing and chasing back of the margins to follow )
