🦷 Case Study: EOTRH

Meet Hero, an 18 year old gelding.

During a routine dental examination, tartar was identified affecting Hero’s incisors. These findings prompted referral to a veterinary BAEDT member for further investigation, including dental radiographs.

The radiographs revealed changes consistent with EOTRH (Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis).

EOTRH is a progressive and painful condition that primarily affects the incisor and sometimes the canine teeth. Much of the disease process occurs below the gumline, affecting the tooth roots and surrounding tissues, so the full extent of the disease may not be visible during a routine examination alone.

Following veterinary assessment, the decision was made to extract all of Hero’s incisors to remove the source of pain.

Although this can look quite dramatic, horses can adapt remarkably well following incisor extraction. Their cheek teeth continue to grind their food, and many horses go on to have an excellent quality of life.

As you can see, Hero is doing brilliantly and is already happily grazing long grass 🌱

A great example of the importance of routine dental examinations, recognising abnormalities and referring for further investigation when needed.

Another busy clinic complete with Nicole Du Toit, the visiting dental specialist from the Equine Dental Clinic Ltd!

We had 9 lovely horses with a mixture of difficult extractions, sinus surgeries and infundibular caries restorations (fillings) to treat, so an exciting couple of days!

A huge thank you to Nicole and the best team of assistants I could ask for who kept things running flawlessly for the last few days! 🫶 We couldn’t have done it without you Sarah, Sam, Catherine, Graham, Phil, Dad, George, Caroline, Christine and Lisa!
