🦷 Case Report | Recurrent Oral Pyogenic Granuloma
A 45-year-old male presented with a 2-month history of a recurrent, painless swelling in the right mandibular posterior region.
The lesion had previously been removed but recurred, and the patient reported continuous bleeding and facial swelling.
Clinical examination revealed a bleeding soft-tissue lesion, associated with significant dental calculus and local irritation.
🔎 Our approach:
1️⃣ Clinical examination and assessment
2️⃣ Scaling and elimination of local irritants
3️⃣ Surgical excision under local anesthesia
4️⃣ Specimen preservation in 10% formalin
5️⃣ Histopathological examination
The initial clinical diagnosis was Pyogenic Granuloma, which was subsequently confirmed histopathologically.
Pyogenic granuloma is a benign reactive vascular lesion, commonly associated with chronic local irritation such as plaque, calculus, trauma, or other irritants. Despite being benign, it can grow, bleed easily, and recur if the lesion is incompletely removed or the underlying irritant remains.
🧠 The lesson:
Treat the lesion — but don't forget to treat the cause.
