Accidents happen. The most important thing to remember when someone has broken a tooth is not to panic.

First, take a look around for the tooth. If it’s an adult tooth, and it’s clean and whole, place it back in the empty socket. If you can’t place it back in the mouth, keep the missing tooth moist by packing it in milk or saliva. If it’s a baby tooth, bring it along to the dental office just in case we need to see it.

Next — call us! Let us know what happened and we’ll get you in as soon as we can. If for some reason you can’t get through to us, then head to the emergency room and call us for a follow-up appointment.

Gum disease can be a scary topic, but not when you know the facts! Red or swollen gums, bleeding gums, bad breath, or sensitive teeth may indicate the early stages of gum disease (gingivitis). Left untreated, gum disease can lead to shrinking gums, and tooth loss. Caught early, gum disease can be reversed with periodontal treatment and at-home care.

Brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing before bed, plus regular dental check-ups with professional teeth cleanings are essential in preventing gum disease. Call to book an appointment today!

Sugar-free gum and candy with xylitol can help prevent cavities. Unlike sugary gum — which breaks down and creates an acidic, cavity-causing pH in the mouth — xylitol maintains a consistent PH and chewing it helps promote saliva production. Chew a small amount at a time, multiple times throughout your day (up to 10 grams per 24-hour period).
Warning: Xylitol is safe for humans but even small quantities can be deadly for dogs. So keep all products containing xylitol away from your pooch.

Sports and energy drinks are terrible for your teeth. The pH levels in these drinks breed bacteria and can cause irreversible erosion to tooth enamel. If you indulge in a post-game or post-workout energy drink, be sure to rinse with water afterward or chew a stick of sugar-free gum. Better yet – replace your sports drink with water!

Storing a toothbrush out in the open — especially near the toilet — exposes it to airborne germs and bacteria. Instead, store your toothbrush standing up inside a cabinet so that the water can drain in between brushings and it’s a little more protected.

Researchers have found that people wearing traditional dentures or have not replaced missing teeth have a higher risk for malnutrition because it’s more difficult to chew fruits, vegetables, nuts, and meat. This means they sometimes avoid these nutritious foods. If you suspect this is a problem, please talk to us about dental implants. They’re a strong, long-term solution that lets you eat anything you’d like — even steak, apples, and corn on the cob!

Premolars, or bicuspids, are used for chewing and grinding food. They are located between the canine teeth and the molars. Adults typically have eight premolars, two on each side of the canines. Premolars resemble molars but aren’t quite as big — a premolar has two cusps while a molar has four.
