As a Dental Hygienist and the proud owner of this clinic, this week means so much to me! 💜

Dental hygiene is more than just clean teeth – it’s about prevention, education, and helping people feel confident in their smiles.😀

Every day, I have the privilege of caring for my patients and building relationships that go far beyond the chair. ✨

To my amazing patients: thank you for trusting me with your oral health. 🦷

And to my fellow hygienists: your dedication and compassion truly make a difference in people’s lives. 👏

If it’s been a while since your last visit, this is your sign to prioritize your dental and overall health! ✔️

Did you know that prolonged soother use can affect how your child’s teeth and jaw grow? 👶

Soothers are safe for infants, but problems can arise with long term use such as:

➡ Open bite (front teeth don’t touch)
➡ Narrow palate
➡ Misalignment
➡ Speech difficulties
➡ Altered jaw growth

Timing is important:

✔️ 0-12 months: Ok
✔️ 1-2 years: Start limiting use
⚠️ 2-3 years: Begin weaning
❌ After 3: Higher risk of dental changes

Tips to help wean:

💤 Gradually reduce i.e. nap time only
🧸 Replace with comfort items
🔉 Use positive reinforcement

The good news? Most changes can correct themselves if habits stop early!👧

With early guidance, we can keep your child’s smile on track! 🦷✨

Oral health and diabetes are bidirectional meaning each condition can influence each other 🔃

How diabetes affects oral health:

➡️Gum disease or periodontitis - If blood glucose is high, it weakens the immune system, makes it harder to fight bacteria and increases inflammation 🔥This raises the risk of swollen, bleeding gums, gum recession, loose teeth and tooth loss 🦷

➡️Dry mouth - Diabetes can reduce saliva flow leading to bad breath, higher cavity risk and mouth infections 💧

➡️Oral thrush - High sugar levels in saliva can promote fungal infections like oral thrush 🧫

➡️Slow healing - It can cause slow wound healing which affects recovery after dental procedures 🩸

How gum disease affects diabetes:

➡️Increases systemic inflammation 🔥

➡️Makes it harder to control blood glucose 🩸

➡️Raises insulin resistance 💉

Maintaining these both together improves oral health, blood sugar control, and overall health outcomes ✅

Those who have diabetes need strict homecare regimens and more frequent dental hygiene visits to help maintain oral health! 💫

✨Take Home Whitening vs Professional Whitening ✨

Take home whitening products are an affordable option to brighten your smile, but some things to note:

🔹You can’t use as high of a concentration of peroxide as there is no way to protect it from getting on the gums and causing irritation
🔹With a lower concentration of peroxide, it is a gradual process to brighten
🔹Take home options like white strips are a one size fit all, so sometimes not ideal for teeth that are misaligned. Custom trays or whitening pens would be a better option

Professional whitening is more of an investment, but some points to consider:

🔹You can use a higher concentration of peroxide because a gingival barrier can be placed to protect gums and root surfaces, minimizing irritation and sensitivity
🔹Your smile will be brightened 6-20 shades in less than 1 hour, so less time commitment
🔹Can be done on misaligned teeth

Any whitening option you choose, keep in mind that it can cause sensitivity.⚡ Using a sensitive toothpaste 1-2 weeks prior to whitening can help minimize it. 🪥

Take home options are also great for touch ups post professional whitening to keep your smile bright!🦷

A mandibular lingual wire (fixed retainer) is what keeps your teeth from shifting after braces come off.✅

It works 24/7🕛 – which means your cleaning routine has to step up too!🦷

Here’s how to keep that retainer and teeth in top shape:

🪥Brushing - angle your toothbrush carefully along the gumline and towards the wire, plaque loves to hide where the wire meets the tooth.

🧵Flossing – regular flossing won’t cut it. You need to use floss threaders, super floss or a water flosser to clean under the wire daily. Plaque builds quickly and needs to be removed at the end of the day before it hardens into tartar.

📆Don’t skip hygiene visits – professional cleanings are extra important with a fixed retainer. Hygienist’s have special tools to help safely clean around the wire and keep your gums and teeth healthy!

Follow along for more tips! 🤓

🚨PSA: Change your toothbrush or toothbrush heads after you’ve been sick! 😷

Tis the season for sickness so whether you are fighting a cold, flu or any other bug, your toothbrush can hang onto leftover germs.🧫

You might feel better, but those microbes can stick around on the bristles and possibly reintroduce themselves - especially if your toothbrush is next to other family members. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Fresh body = fresh toothbrush. Toss the old one and start clean. 🪥

❗Note: In general, replace toothbrush heads at least every 3 months or unless bristles show signs of wear. If bristles are splayed, it’s not working as effectively and can be a sign of brushing too hard.

Oral health refresh! 🌿

💡Did you know plaque that doesn’t get removed with daily homecare, will turn into tartar?

Once tartar (aka calculus) forms, it hardens to the tooth and root surfaces, and can’t be removed with daily brushing and flossing. 🪥

Dental hygienist’s use special tools to safely and effectively remove it from the teeth and below the gumline. 🦷

Plaque and tartar can lead to gingivitis and gum disease.❌

Are you due for an oral health refresh? Let us help! ✔️
