“The ship has sailed.”

Not because every dentist, orthodontist, oral surgeon, or TMJ provider agrees on the role of myofunctional therapy.

Not because every question has been answered.

But because we’re no longer asking whether oral function matters.

We now know that how we breathe, swallow, rest our tongue, use our facial muscles, and develop our jaws influences oral health outcomes.

The discussion has shifted.

The question isn’t whether function affects orthodontics, TMJ concerns, airway health, stability of treatment, or oral development.

The question is how much it affects them, when it matters most, and how we can better integrate function into patient care.

Patients are asking these questions.
Research continues to grow.
Interdisciplinary collaboration is increasing.

The ship has sailed on the idea that teeth exist in isolation from the muscles, habits, and function surrounding them.

The future of oral health isn’t about choosing between structure and function.

It’s about understanding that they work together.

Changing lives and saving lives….

Myofunctional therapy is not in the scope of practice for dental hygienists in NL…. But the awareness is out there for its impact on sleep disordered breathing and TMJ.

I am proud to be screening for symptoms and referring out for more than 5 years now.

News release from February 26, 2026 (Ottawa, ON) — New national public opinion research released today by the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association (CDHA) shows Canadians place exceptionally high trust in dental hygienists and strongly support prevention‑focused dental hygiene care, while also acknowledging that barriers to access remain.

The polling, conducted by Abacus Data, found that 96 per cent of Canadians hold a positive impression of dental hygienists, with more than eight in ten viewing them as an essential or important part of the health care system.

These findings underscore the central role dental hygienists play in prevention, early disease detection, and the maintenance of oral and overall health.
