Meet Julia 🦷

Thirty years after finishing orthodontic treatment, Julia noticed some movement with her teeth and came in to see what’s what.

Dr Smith was able to get her into a Hawley retainer and get those teeth heading back towards their 90s glory.

They aren’t an extra add-on; they are a very important step of your entire orthodontic journey.

Here is what you need to know about making them work for you:

• Consistency is everything: Elastics rely on continuous, gentle pressure. Wear them all day and you make steady progress. Skip a day, and your teeth can shift back, losing valuable ground. In fact, inconsistent wear is the single most common reason orthodontic treatment runs longer than originally planned.
• The discomfort passes: If your mouth feels a bit sore, hang in there. The discomfort gets much easier to manage once your teeth adjust to the regular pressure.

It's a reasonable instinct. And honestly? Sometimes it's the right call. But sometimes, waiting quietly closes a window that doesn't reopen.

Here's why timing matters in orthodontics: young jawbones are still growing. Still flexible.
