Thinking about braces? Timing isn’t about "right or wrong". It'’s about the strategy... and our consultations are always complimentary. 🦷🤔

Whether you're looking at treatment for your child or finally considering it for yourself, the "when" depends entirely on your goals and your unique smile.

Early Intervention (The Growth Window): For kids, the Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommend coming to see us around age 7.

Why? We can work WITH a growing jaw, not against it. This allows us to make more space for the permanent teeth to come in by widening the dental arches or correct jaw growth problems before the bone fully sets. It’s about simplifying future treatment and using the least amount of invasive intervention possible.

Adult Treatment (The Precision Phase):

It is never too late! While we aren't working with growth anymore, adult treatment is still incredibly effective and common in our office. With modern options like clear aligners or discreet braces, we focus on things like healthy tooth movement, bone health, and instilling the confidence that comes with a fabulous smile!

Why start now?
A consultation costs nothing and gives you a roadmap for treatment. Whether you start today or three years from now, having the facts helps you make the best choice for you or your family.

Which phase are you curious about—early intervention or adult options? Let’s talk in the comments! 👇

We know it’s tempting. But sticking to the “safe foods” list really does make a difference during treatment.
Here’s why:

1️⃣ Preventing Broken Brackets
Hard or sticky foods (popcorn kernels, nuts, caramel, gum) can loosen brackets or bend wires. If that happens, we may need to repair it sooner than your next visit.

2️⃣ Protecting the Archwire
Your wires are carefully adjusted to guide teeth in specific directions. Biting into something very hard can distort that wire and affect how teeth are moving.

3️⃣ Oral Hygiene
Sticky and sugary foods are more likely to get trapped around braces. Because brushing and flossing take extra effort with brackets, trapped sugar can increase the risk of white spots, plaque buildup, and cavities.

4️⃣ Comfort
After an adjustment, teeth are naturally tender. Crunchy or chewy foods can make that sensitivity worse.

Following the food guidelines helps keep treatment moving efficiently and comfortably.

The popcorn will still be there when the braces come off.

Something most people don't think about when they're comparing orthodontic options. 👇
Not all dental providers have the same training.
Your family dentist completed dental school — four years, fully qualified to practice general dentistry.

Dr. Smith did that too, and then kept going. Specifically:
Honours Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toronto in 2011, his dental degree from the University of Connecticut in 2015 and his Specialty Certificate in Orthodontics from the University of Minnesota in 2017. To toot his horn even further (because we think he’s such an awesome guy) Dr. Smith is an active Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.

Being an orthodontist means he’s focused entirely on how teeth move, how jaws develop, growth and facial structure, and complex bite and alignment cases.

Can a dentist offer clear aligners? Yes.
Is it the same as seeing a certified orthodontic specialist? No.

Orthodontists complete 2–3 years of additional specialty training focused entirely on tooth movement and jaw development. That expertise is especially important for growing kids or for more complex cases.

The good news? Finding out where you stand costs nothing. Consultations at Barrie Orthodontics are always complimentary.

Always wanted straighter teeth but unsure about traditional braces?

A complimentary assessment with Dr. Smith can determine whether clear aligners are a good option for you.

Here are a few reasons patients choose aligners:

🦷 They’re removable and discreet, which makes them a popular choice for adults and teens.
🦷 You can brush and floss normally since there are no brackets or wires.
🦷 Many mild to complex cases can be treated with aligners, depending on your specific bite and alignment.
🦷 We offer flexible payment plans so treatment can fit comfortably into your budget.

The best way to know if aligners are right for you is a proper evaluation.

Did you know orthodontics is about more than straight teeth?

Yes, we love the moment braces come off. The smiles. The excitement. The photos. Those never get old.

But orthodontics is also about how your teeth and jaws function together — how your bite fits together, how teeth wear over time, and how alignment supports long term stability.

That’s why we recognize World Orthodontic Health Day on May 15th. It’s a reminder that orthodontic care is both aesthetic and functional.

For children, the Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends an assessment around age 7. At this stage, a mix of baby and adult teeth allows us to evaluate jaw growth and alignment problems early. Treatment doesn’t always begin right away, but early evaluation helps us guide development properly.

And for adults? It’s never too late. In fact, a significant portion of our patients are adults choosing to improve their bite and alignment.

If you are interested in improving your orthodontic health, reach out to book your complimentary consultation with Dr. Smith.

Big smiles all around for Jonah the other day.

Braces off day is always special, and this one came with an extra dose of excitement from Dad too.

YES, moving teeth requires a little “oomph.”
And here’s a common misconception we hear all the time: that clear aligners hurt less than braces.
The truth? The “battle of the ouch” is actually a tie.

Whether you’re rocking traditional metal braces or sleek clear aligners, both work by applying gentle, consistent pressure to move your teeth into place. That pressure can feel snug or tender for the first few days after a new tray or an adjustment. That’s just the movement doing its job.

Braces can have the occasional pokey wire. Aligners can feel extra tight on day one. Different experience, same science.

So which hurts more?
Neither. They both take a little getting used to on your way to a confident, healthy smile. 🦷
