Aphthous ulcers (canker sores) are common, non-contagious, painful white or yellow ulcers with red borders that form on the soft tissues inside the mouth, affecting 20-25% of people. They are generally harmless, resolving in 1-2 weeks, but often recur (Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis).

Causes include stress, minor trauma, and nutritional deficiencies, with treatment focusing on pain relief and accelerated healing.

Key Aspects of Aphthous Ulcers:~~

Appearance: Small, round, shallow, white/yellow centers with red rims.

Location: Inside cheeks, lips, tongue, or under the tongue; never on the outer lips.

Types: Minor (small, heal fast), Major (larger, deeper, take weeks to heal), and Herpetiform (tiny, in clusters).

Causes/Triggers: Stress, accidental biting, hormonal changes, Vitamin B12/iron deficiencies, and certain foods.

Not Contagious: Unlike cold sores, they cannot be spread by kissing or sharing food.Management and

Use a soft toothbrush, avoid acidic/spicy foods, and rinse with warm salt water.

When to See a Doctor: If ulcers last longer than 3 weeks, are excessively large, or recur very frequently, as they may indicate underlying conditions (e.g., Behçet disease, Crohn's disease).Difference from Cold SoresAphthous ulcers (canker sores) are inside the mouth and not contagious.Cold sores (fever blisters) are caused by the herpes virus, appear outside the mouth on the lips, and are contagious.

02/04/2026

Burning Mouth syndrome (BMS) is a chronic, often daily, burning sensation in the mouth—particularly the tongue, lips, or roof of the mouth—without visible dental or medical causes. Symptoms include moderate-to-severe burning, tingling, numbness, and a bitter/metallic taste. It is believed to be a neuropathic condition often linked to nerve dysfunction,

Hormonal changes (postmenopause), and anxiety. While there is no cure, treatment involves managing symptoms through medication (e.g., clonazepam, antidepressants), lifestyle adjustments, and stress reduction, with some cases lasting for years.

Key Aspects of Burning Mouth Syndrome

Symptoms: The primary symptom is a burning sensation that can be constant or come and go, often worsening as the day progresses. Other sensations include numbness, tingling, and a metallic or bitter taste. Pain typically affects the tip of the tongue, lips, or roof of the mouth.

Causes & Risk Factors:

Primary BMS: Neuropathic abnormality in the nervous system.

Secondary BMS: Caused by underlying conditions:

Hormonal: Postmenopause (most common), thyroid problems.

Nutritional/Medical: Deficiencies in iron, zinc, or B vitamins; anemia; dry mouth (xerostomia); and acid reflux (GERD).

Allergies/Irritation: Reactions to toothpaste, mouthwash, or dentures.
Psychological: Anxiety, depression, or severe stress

Preventive measure:

Behavioral Therapy: Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), meditation, or yoga can help reduce stress.

Lifestyle: Avoiding to***co, alcohol, hot/spicy foods, and acidic foods.

Prognosis: The condition can be persistent. While it may resolve on its own in some individuals, for many, it is a chronic condition that lasts for months or years.

Disclaimer: Consult a healthcare professional (dentist, doctor, or specialist) to rule out other medical issues before diagnosing burning mouth syndrome.
