“WHITE PATCHES ON TEETH”
One of the most common cosmetic or aesthetic complaints we get as dental practitioners is “I don’t like the white patches or streaks on my teeth!”
These “white patches” are most commonly referred to as FLUOROSIS.
This is a developmental enamel defect that results from children ingesting excessive amounts of fluoride whilst their dental enamel is still developing.
The severity of fluorosis depends on the amount of fluoride ingested, as well as when and for how long during the enamel formation process the fluoride was ingested.
The usually first step to helping diminish these areas and create a more pleasing aesthetic is usually PROFESSIONAL TEETH WHITENING followed with a regular topical application of a CPP-ACP product (a casein phosphopeptide) such as Toothmousse or Recaldent.
This will assist in “blending” the white streaks into the surrounding enamel.
For severe cases, further treatment such as composite bonding or veneers may be required, but striving more minimal intervention dentistry is always our first port of call.
