While some babies may outgrow tongue-tie as the frenulum stretches over time, others struggle with breastfeeding due to their inability to perform necessary tongue functions.

In cases where tongue-tie causes issues, some caregivers may suggest bottle-feeding.

However, lactation consultant Marsha Walker highlights that switching to a bottle won't necessarily address underlying issues like tongue thrust or swallowing problems (Walker, 2006).

Tongue-tie, medically known as ankyloglossia or a "tight frenulum," is a condition present from birth.

While it may run in families, it's not considered a health problem unless it significantly affects breastfeeding.

This condition involves a thin membrane, the frenulum, anchoring the tongue to the bottom jaw.

In tongue-tie, the membrane is shallow or extends to the tip of the tongue, limiting normal tongue movement.

Signs include difficulty sticking out the tongue, a heart-shaped appearance, or the tongue curling downward.

Symptoms of tongue-tie impacting breastfeeding include;

💦Poor latch

💦Slow weight gain

💦Nipple pain

💦Clicking sounds during feeding

It can also lead to complications like mastitis or difficulties in oxygen intake during feeding.

If you notice these signs, it's essential to seek support from a trained health care provider who specalises in tongue tie assessments.
